Model 45565 On-Car Injector Flow Bench

Technician Tips

  • Utilize the searchable database by always saving test results and filling in all applicable fields so that a search can be used to recall data at a later time. If needed, the searchable database can be used to compare a similar vehicle and symptom.
  • Use the print capabilities of the On Car Injector Flow Bench software to document the diagnosis and repair for the customer.
  • Some vehicles have batteries that are inaccessible or in the rear, most manufacturers on this type of set up provide an easier jumper cable point, which can provide a power and ground source.
  • The On Car Injector Flow Bench can be used to command a PWM* controlled fuel pump “on” for pinpoint tests when a factory Scan tool is not available. These PWM fuel pumps are duty cycle controlled and can not be hot-wired.
    * Pulse Width Modulated
  • The On Car Injector Flow Bench can be used, as a fuel injector inductance tester required by a major Auto Manufacturer. (GM Kentmoore J 39021)
  • Use the “Drain Tester” selection to depressurize the fuel system before removing the tester to avoid fuel spray.
  • The On Car Injector Flow Bench can be used separately, as a fuel pressure gauge with min/max capabilities. This means you do not need to physically watch the fuel pressure at all times for those intermittent pressure drops.
  • A large percentage of GM trucks use mechanical poppet valves after the electrical injector that can stick closed causing a cylinder miss-fire, even a no start. The On Car Injector Flow Bench has a special SCPI test function for this type of fuel system.
  • Not sure if you hooked up the connectors to the injectors in the proper order? To verify you are condemning the correct injector you can use the injector locator function to pinpoint the proper injector location.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do connect to vehicles that do not have schrader valves?
There are kits that will allow one to "T" one into the fuel system.
  • How do you hook up to the PCM?
If you cannot directly connect to the injectors because of an obstruction, then use the PCM. Use your shop manuals, ALLDATA or Mitchell's…. Etc., wiring schematics to identify the correct pin outs for the specific vehicle you are working on.
  • Does this tool need calibrated?
Each time the unit is powered on for use it calibrates itself, just as with any flow bench.
  • Will this unit work on aftermarket injectors the same as OEM?
Yes, actually it’s the only tool that will identify if the wrong flow rate injectors were installed in the vehicle without removing them first.
  • How do you know which injector is bad?
    Use the injector locator function.
  • Do I have to have a computer in order to use this tool?
The vehicle injector flow rates can be determined without the use of a computer, however to view injector specifications, database and print test reports you will need a computer.
  • Will there be updates available?
Periodic updates will be made available.
  • What is the Warranty?
    13 months.

Technician Testimonial

Imagine some wild & whacky scientists getting a hold of Jim Linder's DNA then cloning his brain, throwing away the right(artistic/subjective) half and then boxing the left (analytical/logical) side for us to use to diagnose those REALLY tough drivability problem!!!
:-)

A case in point: had a new patient ('93 F150 5.0L) referred from another clinic with a slight yet noticeable surge under light load ONLY. After checking all the basics and getting nowhere, I finally decided to call in the heavy artillery unit. The fuel system and injectors passed all of Scanalyzer's numerous tests except for the DYNAMIC balance test (#4 injector failed, #8 was borderline). To satisfy my own curiosity I lifted the entire fuel rail so I could observe the spray patterns. To my surprise, I hardly saw ANY difference between the good, the bad, and the borderline injectors (as seen on TV). A little worried that my Scanalyzer and I were overlooking something, I performed another test with the fuel rail floating in mid air... same results. With regained confidence, installed 2 new injectors (a whole set was NOT an option here) and the truck is smooth as silk (for a Ford anyway!).

Moral of this long story: If you do a lot of drivability work, it WILL save your butt and make you $$$ many times over. Also, unlike many tools/equipment manufacturers, the people (Chuck Mehozonek & co.) at Hickok are actually helpful and very knowledgeable.

PS: No, I do NOT own stocks in Hickoks/Waekon. I have followed this forum for years and rarely ever I see Mac Scanalyzer getting mentioned here. It will be a GREAT addition to your diagnostic arsenal.
